As a sophomore in high school, Freedom Chairs founder Tim Balz noticed a fellow student laboring with an inadequate manual wheelchair. He could tell the student truly needed an electronic wheelchair, so Tim sprung to action to offer his assistance. His first step was trading his moped scooter for a broken electric wheelchair. Next, he repaired the wheelchair back to working order and donated it to the student in need. This commitment to providing those in need with access to mobility solutions spurred the concept behind Freedom Chairs.

Since the initial wheelchair flip, Freedom Chairs has given away more than 150 wheelchairs, various pieces of medical equipment, and more. The non-profit organization prides itself on never denying a person in need through its mission to provide the freedoms of mobility to all those struggling to find it. Although Freedom Chairs primarily offers support to those in Indiana, its partnerships worldwide allow potential mobility solutions in other states and even internationally.

Freedom Chairs and Tim have been recognized by The Indianapolis Children Museum, 5-Hour Energy, the American Red Cross, and more. It is only able to operate off the generous donations of its supporters through monetary donations and donations of wheelchairs and equipment.
